Our seniors produced one of the best performances to bring home the Bedlow Cup in front of a heartfelt energetic group of fans up in Home Farm on Saturday 16th May.
There were no occasion jitters, no nerves on show just a team who have been battling for each other week in, week out all season building up to an unbelievable crescendo.
Going into the match, Decies were the form team, they had beaten our seniors on both occasions in the league 2-1. However, the first half display produced from Stamullen FC was an absolute delight to watch.
Nally found Callan overlapping Wogan and Callanโ€™s left footed cross found Stamullen skipper Niall Barrett. Barrettโ€™s deft touch was sublime, killing it ever so sweetly. Niall fired it past the keeper and we were 1-0 up after 6 minutes. Barrett had already created a chance for himself 2 minutes earlier, but the Decies Keeper was equal to it.
Stamullen wanted more as they were slicing through the Decies midfield. However, the Ballyfermot outfit had other ideas as they made it level shortly after we had taken the lead.
This didnโ€™t deter Stamullen in the slightest. Captain Barrett was up to his old tricks in number 10, like he has been for almost 10 years for our seniors. He picked up possession, drew the defender close to him and slipped in Walsh who easily dispatched his shot to give us the lead again.
Both teams were evenly matched in battle however it was Stamullen that were creating the better chances. Whelan and McAllister were two complete brickhouses, marshalling a backline that included 19 year old Jack Farrell who wasnโ€™t phased by this Cup Final at all. Nally and Garvey were spraying passes around as if it was a training session, Wogan and Sean Barrett out the wings were creating havoc for the Decies defence as they couldnโ€™t deal with what Stamullen had to offer. Roche in goal had very little to do as Stamullen was dominating this first half. The only bad point in that first half was that it ended because it was full steam ahead for Stamullenโ€ฆ

Decies made a couple of wholesale chances and suddenly the balance of power shifted. Our seniors couldnโ€™t get a foothold of the 2nd half at all. Decies almost had the ball in the net only for Vice-Captain Seanie Barrett to clear it off the line!! Garvey was then put through, and in a last ditch tackle the Decies defender prevented him from making it 3-1. With 25 minutes to go, disaster struck as Decies made it 2-2.
In order to inject some energy into his side, Dunphy made some crucial changes at the right time. Lally slotted in at left back and was right in the thick of the action, last weekโ€™s semi-final hero, Egan, was brought on into the middle of the park, Donnelly who only landed from Australia 24 hours earlier, contested a battle of brawn with the Decies left back. Cassin, after his introduction last week upped the ante, added a different dimension to the Stamullen attack as Decies were on their knees.
Stamullen then took over this Cup Final. An array of chances was peppered on the Decies goal and all of a sudden, Decies were looking for the final whistle. Man of the match, Stephen McAllisterโ€™s free-kick was destined for the top corner only for the Decies netminder to claw it away for a corner. Boylan was introduced to sure up our defence and he slotted into the backline like it was a Sunday morning beach walk in Laytown. 2-2 after 90 minutes and another excellent extra-time display, like last weekโ€™s semi-final, shows the testament of our fitness.
With 6 minutes to go, Garveyโ€™s corner found the head of Semi-Final hero Egan who directed it to the back post to give us our first piece of silverware in 10 years. Today proved why this team has achieved success. A strong bench can make all the difference. Conor Butler was unlucky not to feature, however he played his part in this cup run cementing our Quarter-Final win with an exceptional finish and Corey Murphy, who got injured in our 10 man battle of St. Maryโ€™s, was on hand to help with any Physio requirements.
